St Pirans flag

sorry, i was referring to the arab spring referred to by reginaldon..... out of the fire and all that.
the donkeys in cornwall cant be worse than the fatherless gentlemen running a local water company. trust them, the water's safe!
i really dont know why we tolerate it all. probably just spineless.

Camelford wasn't caused by a water company but by a water authority, nationalis by the Wilson government. Blame socialist incompetence, not commercial pressures.

yes, doesnt time fly.
funny, dont remember blaming anyone! considering the state of the country at the moment, "socialist incompetence" is looking pretty attractive to me.
is it commercial competence or commercial greed that charges me £1400 per annum for water?

Haven't we been spoilt this year and been given a goverment funded £50 chopped off our water bills?

Most of that is for sewerage. if we had a tourist tax in the SW, like most of Europe, our bills would be a lot lower. and the cost of sorting out leaking pipes and crappy sewage discharges is largely down to nationalisation: nothing was done for years because putting up water rates was seen as electoral suicide by both sides. Thatcher privatised the water authorities because imminent EU directives on water and waste treatment would cost a fortune, which privatised water companies could borrow. our water charges pay mainly for running costs, interest payments and dividends to keep City institutions investing.

Yes, but SWW have already decided that they want another big increase this year, so no change there. And, I think the 'refund' isn't due until next year. And, yes, living in the middle of Cornwall, 8 miles from Camelford, I think it's high time the Emmetts were charged to pee in our waters!:D:D:D

Going back to St Piran, was at the Hoe this afternoon and not a St Piran's or Devon flag in site! Just Mr Fogg!:):)

One yachit in Sutton harbour flies the Devon flag, a bit tattered, but proud. Must get one myself.

cornwall is dependant on tourism. visitors there all stay in premises which are water metered, so the businesses which benefit the most from tourism include the costs incurred for water and drainage in their prices. as you can see emmitts do already pay their fair share towards the veracious appetites of the board at sww. £132,500,000.00 profits last year, an increase of 8.3% on the previous year at a time when the poor are being squeezed to death. yet again the charges go up this year and they think they can get away with it!
dont let yourself be fooled into believing the tourists are to blame.
the water companies in the uk made over a billion pounds in profit last year. most of it going to foreign owned companies who dont pay tax.

Thanks to Thatcher et al.

Once Britain did own all its public utilities.

I used to live in a county borough in the North in which the local authority (tory controlled) owned ALL its, state of the art, utilities until nationalisation and as a result with the profits was able to build outstanding public buildings and by far the best designed and equipped grammar school, I have yet to see. How these parties have gone down the pan!

OK - I've succumbed to Fred Drift!

I was asked the other day what the colours (black & white) on the Cornish flag signify. Do any of our esteemed Cornish members know?

Don't blame the emmetts. It is not their fault that successive governments in Westminster have withdrawn funding from Cornwall because of objective one rather than used it as it was intended to supplement it. It is not the emmetts fault that those in Westminster have denied all opportunities for propper infrastructure and investment. Nor is it the emmetts fault that successive Councils in Cornwall have done nothing about it! Lastly, it is hardly the emmetts fault that all the O1 funding went on wanky art galleries that employ three members of staff and are of no relevance to the vast majority fo the locals or the tourists who come to Cornwall.
