St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

At last the weather forecast we have been waiting for and a great excuse to upgrade St Patrick's Day into St Patrick's weekend

We couldn't get to SV on Friday as usual having spent the day in work re-organising work schedules so that we could take Monday off.

Saturday was cleaning day so we headed off on Sunday morning to return Tuesday afternoon - St Patrick's Day.

Heading South:

Greystones - new marina under construction:

Wicklow Head ahead - we were heading for wind over ebb tide coming out of Wicklow so the plan was to keep in close "under the lighthouse":

Under the lighthouse - nice and flat:

Not so flat out at Horseshoe Buoy:

or at Mizen Head:

Mizen Head ahead - what a difference without wind:

Even if it was a bit cold for MrsSV on the flybridge at 25knots:

alright alright, I was a bit cold too:

The wind was getting up from te South now so we headed into Dublin Bay to find a sheltered anchorage near Sandycove. It wasn't to be and the bay was starting to get a bit lumpy:

so we headed for home: Arrived at Malahide Estuary @ 15:15hrs. Just needed to squeeze past the small yacht under sail. the wind was getting up from the south (port side in pic) which meant time to drop the camera and concentrate:

Jeez the wind saw me drift the last 200yds - out of gear @ 3.6knots on GPS.
Anyway, I lined her up perfectly and let the wind do the trick with a quick throw into astern to stop me running into Barney who was on the stern of his yacht watching me bear down on him.

Of course, after we secured the lines, the wind eased:

Hopefully this is the first cruise blog of many in 2009.

You can sing it - after leaving SV in the water all winter we've been waiting too long /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

I can not sing in tune, but nevertheless the feeling is great /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

Excellent, see you just about managed to squeeze into that marina berth /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Great cruising grounds from all the pics been posted on here. Must get over your way some time in the not too distant future.

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

Miss Malahide Marina a lot. In Bangor Marina now. Not as pretty. Miss Smiths . Sort of Miss Gibneys.

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

Tis a nice handy berth alright but it can be a bit of a pig getting on in a strong westerly combined with Ebb tide.

It is a bit tighter at the pointy end /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yip it is a grand spot with lovely cruising grounds within 2 - 3 hours or a lazy day around Dublin Bay and Islands.

Good post Mick /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Looks great. We got out for a run on Saturday. Arklow looks a little better than the last time I was there.

Hi Noel,

That wasn't you on the beach then /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yip, Arklow has improved a lot - the flicks down the road are great - we saw "Slumdog Millionaire" on Sunday and "Internationsl" on Monday.

Nope, the pubs weren't shut - just not selling Cranberry /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It did feel a bit erm vulnerable on the pontoon though /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Miss Malahide Marina is a nice looking girl and so is Miss Smiths but the nicest must be Miss Gibney's 2008 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We hope to get up to Bangor this season - keep an eye out for us /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nice SV...

Only thing ...... "not so flat" ???????? ... that is a nice day for us up here ... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Yip, that was "flat" for Wicklow Head /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The trick is go way out or under the lighthouse depending on wind / tide /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

Christ, it's ages since I have been into Wicklow or Arklow. They seem to have changed alot. What happened to the hole in the ground, fuel berth? Anyway as we seem to have both been made redundant, we should be scooting around the Irish sea a bit.
Never heard of anyone but me going to Cortown??, three foot deap, no tide, peddalows and kids knicking flags.

Bit further down than Arklow. Massive crazy golf place, a bit like Blackpool. The entrance, one on it's own. You had to hit the harbour enterence at a good 18 knots to keep steerage. then zoom up this narrow canal with big waves behind you. Then brake and make a sharp right turn. Strange as it had no tide, even though all around had.

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

Yes Courtown has only a 0.8m spring range and 0.15m neap range, as well as an interesting double HW curve at times. It's caused by the tidal stream on the east coast of the Irish sea rear ending itself.

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

You have some great cruising ground over there with lovely views, always nice to see pics too.

Bloody cold up there in winter though! Eh? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Me nose is still dripping into my soup two days later /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Still, the flybridge advantage is moving inside and driving from what my buddie calls the "pussy seat" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: St Patrick\'s \"weekend\"

Aye, Courtown Harbour. Very tight entrance and interesting in any swell which runs all the way into the harbour.

Not for SV.

Good anchorage in sand and use TT to SV2 to go in /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
