St Malo Lock Will Be Closed for August for lock repair.
it was on our local news today.

Confirmed, I heard a report and emailed the Capitaine du Port. He confirmed that the lock is closed 1st to 31st August

Scuse my ignorance here guys, but does this mean that St Malo is effectively closed to yachts at the height of the French holidays ?

Only the Bassin Vauban. The marina at St Servan is open (but will grotesquely oversubscribed as the locals from the marina INSIDE the lock will be after places as well).

I'd cross it off the list unless there is a compelling reason to be there. It strikes me as an absoluteley crass decision. I rather presume that they will have to drain the Bassin Vauban to do the work (unless it is only the outer gate that needs work) - in the heat of summer I suspect the odour will resemble Venice ...

ST MALO HARBOUR – REPLACING GATES AT NAYE’S LOCK – AUGUST 2003

Throughout August 2003 work is being undertaken to replace the outer gates of the main lock into St Malo Harbour. ‘Ecluse du Naye’ and the Inner Harbour will be closed to all leisure boats from 1st to 31st August. Keep clear a 1500 tonnes crane barge will be working on the project. Some additional berths will be available at the Bas-Sablons marina. Contact: 00 33 2 99 81 71 34 and fax 00 33 2 99 81 91 81.
