Met a bloke in the pub yesterday, sort of a mate of a mate.

He said he was going to take this 5.5 M rib he'd bought to St Kilda maybe later this week.

I asked if he'd any experience. He said he'd spent a few weeks on a trawler round Iceland.

I suggested he got a chart and did some learning first.

He said he did not like paper stuff and was much happier with his computer.

I asked what he knew about wind over tide or overfalls.

Whats them he said.

So I gave him a bit of an idea. No details.

I've got a rib like what the life boat use. I can go anywhere and fast enough to get out of any trouble. Anyway folk have been sailing round the world for hundreds of years, without to much trouble.

I might see him tomorrow, any advice!!

Just looked for St Kilda on Google Maps.
I'd suggest him to bring a camera.
Seems good for a few piccies, if he eventually makes it.

I reckon he's just blowing off. Tell him you expect some good piccies & I'll bet you never see him again. Mind you, if he does try it, you may never see him again anyway!

Is he planning to trailer it there?

Check the current forecast (you can do it from the BBC weather site on your mobile internet phone) for the area with you when you next see him. (edit; Oh, Carlton has done it for him)

Well actually, quite a high proportion of long distance sailors have died over the centuries. And they were mostly in bigger boats with more shelter & usually with some means of making hot food & drinks.

Tell him to take a lemon or a lime for his G&T to prevent scurvy . . . :D

Edit; Better still tell him to sit on your bow & blast him round Anglesey as a training run.

tie an EPIRB very tightly round his neck ?

Show him this with an RNLI RIB

That's a good point - does he have an RNLI style gantry with an inflatable bouancy bag to help him right it if it flips? Out there off Kilda, it could just as easily be the wind that flips him too. He'll need a Dry suit too.

I wonder it the engines would restart after a flip?
