Excuse me from coming over from goodness knows where, but I have a question for the esteemed Thames contingent.
Do St Kats, really really hate liveabords for a winter? Just thinking of returning to UK for a season of classic meets in the irish sea and then a winter in London, before returning to Portugal. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. (he leaves tugging forelock)
 
They don't 'hate' liveaboards. Some few years ago Tower Hamlets told them they weren't allowed to have them. The fact they had any came to light when someone tried to claim housing allowances etc. After that all the liveaboards moved to South Dock.

Having said all that. If you take your boat there and live on it for a few months then nothing is said. There are many boats there where people live on board during the week and go home at weekends.

Thanks, I wouldnt be an obvious liveaboard anyway, working away as I do and my wife would be seeing friends relatives etc etc. So may well give it a go, thanks again for your help.
By the way, what's south dock like?

I am not a South Dock fan certainly not for a long term stay but OK as an overnight stop.

St Kats has everything from shops to boozers and all within walking distance. Additionally it has quite a nice community drawn from both the properties and the boats.
 
Thanks Byron, had a look at south dock, I dont think it is my kind of place either, have been to St. Kats and liked it there, will keep that in my planning.

Not quite the "posing" qualities of St Kat's but most else very good or better.

It has been said thet the Cruising Club is friendly and do good food.

Is a BW licence required (and thereby a BSS) for Limehouse. It's part of the BW network, or is there a concession for moorers??

Cruising Association is indeed very good.

No you don't need a licence for Limehouse itself.

Rather handy bus (no 13 I think) goes from the road outside straight to TheatreLand.
 
From my observations there were quite a number of folks who used St Kats as a London work flat or weekend cottage.
Mainship Tom of this parish parked up his Aussie monster there for several months when he was on contract to some outfit in the city.Saved the 50 mile each way hike home.

Am a great lover of St Kats but get the feeling that they now want you to pay THEM for the privilege of your boat providing a maritime backdrop for all the pubs/clubs and flats surrounding the marina. ?
 
My vote goes for Limehouse every time . Good value food at the Cruising Association, The Grapes down the road ( avoid The Narrow)and all the shopping, eating and drinking further down the road at Canary Wharf. And of course the No15 bus takes you into the City and West End. Great when you have a bus pass.
 
St Kats are rapidly pricing themselves out of the market compared to Limehouse and South Dock, especially as getting to town from either of the latter is cheap and easy.

Interested in the free spot Cervinia, presumably against the wall by the CA? I'd have security concerns.

The wall on the side of the CA is 24hr only but is free.
If you know where the dental surgery is its outside that but the top of the wall is about 12ft above water level so its OK for the Barge but even with that I need to use the ladder.

Reckon St Kats must now be the most expensive overnight marina in the country and with the worst facilities, have they fixed those showers yet:(

I have used the free morning in Limehouse and its fine with room for several boats, came in via the 24hr all tides entrance from the Regents canal on that occasion but you can still use any other time:)
