Had an interesting chat with the new manager and thought you may be interested. Don't take everything I say as gospel, because I'm only repeating what he told me conversationally.

In brief - the marina has not been profitable for a while and the only way to make it pay is to keep it full (obviously). that's why they are only really interested in annual berth contracts. the place is currently full and there is a long waiting list for annual berths. Therefore, the days of phoning ahead and booking a few weeks in advance for a short visit are over. The best hope of securing a short visit is to call ahead with a few days notice on the chance of a berth-holder being away and their berth being sublet.

He did say it is always worth calling or emailing an enquiry - especially for club visitors who are happy to raft up in the west basin. He is friendly, helpful and very professional and seemingly wants to help people out where he can.

He told me that berth holders will have to be prepared to be jiggled about when they have other big events - such as the Classics Regatta or when the Clippers muster.

On the positive side for those who do get in or have berths - there are lots of improvements being made: new pontoons, better security, fab facilities (ace showers and toilets) and a totally excellent mobile pump out facility. He's also clamping down on those who never move their boats and have apparently been emptying holding tanks directly into the dock. Apparently, for the first time in a long time, there are actually fish in the water.

Going up the Thames is on my list of places to sail next year. What are the alternatives to St Katherines?

Limehouse Basin (although -interestingly - they are also reportedly reducing the number of visitors' berth available in favour of permenant ones) and South Dock. Gallions Point marina is probably best avoided as it is under the flight path of London city airport

The annual berths run from april. I think most people in here who are not in synch yet are on a pro rata base until then, then we go on the annual contact.

I know of at least six boats going in the spring but these are all long term blue water cruisers who only intended to be in for the winter.

We're planning to the return to the UK at the end of the summer in 2015 (Yeah, I know, a while away yet!). I'll be working in London and we'll be looking to buy a place somewhere nearby. We're planning to stay on the boat until we do find somewhere to stay. This would likely take at least a few months.
I had the bright idea that we could moor up in one of the London marinas. I've never lived in central London before, so I thought it could be fun. Is this a sensible idea? We'd probably be looking to get a year contract (although we'd be arriving around Sept/Oct time). Are we likely to find a berth or are we kidding ourselves?

The way we were treated by them over a long standing 6 month booking ruined our plans for the winter and upset me dreadfully and judging by an earlier thread on Scutlebutt we were not the only ones let down

They will be pleased to hear that I will be avoiding the place like the plague
