Taken me ages to run this to ground so for the benefit of anyone who finds the same issue, there are two alignment settings for this instrument not just one

Basically the ST60 display receives direction signals from the masthead unit and puts them into the Seatalk bus. The analogue needle on the display has its own alignment settings - something that has to be done with the masthead unit disconnected and before adjusting the masthead unit itself. The alignment is then done every 30 degrees round the dial and saved.

Only then do you do the alignment necessary for the masthead transducer to correct any offset it might have. Methods for both settings are available from Raymarine.

In my case the display needle was all over the place and not knowing that it was aligned seperately, I simply used the basic alignment mentioned in the owners handbook and which is for the transducer. The result was that one wind direction was shown on the dial whilst another wind direction went to the plotter and the pilot. Confusion all round.

Interesting; I've never before seen mention of the need to calibrate the display with the MHU disconnected. A quick Google search didn't find anything. What is the display aligned against, can you give a link to Raymarines information?

This is interesting. On occasion my ST60 wind direction has been not accurate by a good offset, and dial had walked around the display. It usually sorts itself out. My close hauled position is offset by 15 degrees all the time but when running, dead on centre line.

I would like to understand this dial configuration setting.

I have not consciously compared analogue gauge with Axiom+ display. Will need to do that to note differences.

By this 'first' calibration, are you taking about the 'linearization' that needs to be done, i.e. the bit that just involves motoring round in two circles..?

Then once that is done you align the indicator with the actual apparent wind direction.
