I have tried to RTFM with no success - it's probably a particular button sequence which I just can't see - maybe the page is faded and the eyesight failing. I'd much rather have knots aboard than mph - I've managed to change feet to metres and I can cope with Fahrenheit and Centigrade - but no mph, PLEASE!

If its the tri-data then I think youpress the two left hand buttons, depth and speed together for 2 seconds..... then you enter calibrate mode, press speed until the kph led flashes, and then press reset, and it will change to knots...., same as you do to change feet to metres, but press the speed button instead of the depth button when in calibrate mode...

I also have an ST50, and it annoyingly defaults back to feet when powered down.... OK now I know how to change it back, but bloody annoying.....

Hold down Speed and Trip to enter calibration mode then press Reset to toggle between MPH and Knots. ie Boat Speed.

Wind speed - Press and hold 'CAL' (ibrate) until U1 (knots) or U2 (metres/second) shows. Within 8 seconds Press 'CAL' to change units. After 8 seconds instrument resumes normal operation.

Raymarine site describes it all

Many thanks for the instant replies! I'll try it tomorrow and wonder why it's not in my op manual? It's not a tri-data - if by that you mean has depth, temp and speed all in one...depth is on a separate instrument with log/temp on another. I'll also visit their website for more.

I love these user friendly systems. Why dont these designers ever use some proper ergonomics?

Best I have seen is the Navman plotters which are so user friendly that you hardly ever need to grab hold of the user manual.

Finally managed to set Knots - labyrinthine process to say the least and not in the least user friendly - wonder how long it'll take me to work out just how I did it!!

All you have to do now is change the metres back to feet. How do you cope with that foriegn rubbish? How tall are you?

I reckon that, unless the gps fails, the echo sounder is only of real use in shallow water. So mine is set to feet. 7 feet has meaning, so many metres has none for me. The charts dont really come into it.

We will have to agree to differ as we appear to navigate in rather different ways. Although I might rely on the excellent fix from my GPS I always have a weather eye on whether what it is telling me 'makes sense' This might include looking at what I see around me, as well as looking at the depth. This might mean noticing that I am crossing Hurd Deep in the channel, or having a rough check that the tidal prediction is right when I pass a known point. When I get into shallow water my boat needs 1.8 metres to float in - its not too difficult for me to remember that, besides its my height.

No I'm not that young that I was bought up on metric - I will be the big 50 soon, and I still think in feet and inches as well as metres.
