Hi!

We have just gotten our first sailing boat (a bavarai 30). On it, a ST 2000 tillerpilot is installed. Even though it functions well most of the time, After several hours of use it wil suddenly loose its directional stability and start swinging about. It is NOT only on northerly courses.

When I tried to enter the menu's on the machine, I found that the menu structure is totally different from the menu structure in the manual. It tells me POB or POB after a while. Is this a fault?

Is anyone familiar with htis behaviour? Has anyone found else found differences between the menu structure in reality and in the manual???

Thanks!

David

I would guess you have some water in the instrument. Unscrew the cover and leave it in the airing cupboard for a week.

This might be nothing to do with your problem, but mine sometimes went into standby mode after a number of hours; for example during a long Channel crossing. I put this down to it getting hot and jamming briefly, this causing it to reset. I switched it off for half an hour and it was then OK. It did get hot, especially so in sunny weather when it was working in direct sunlight. This happened a couple of times in one crossing of 22 hours. It never lost its way though, it just stopped steering.
I never had occasion to go into the menu so don't know if it was as per the manual. I don't have that boat any more so I can't check it.

Yes my ST2000 seems to have a completely different menu than that shown in the manual. I've only tried to enter it once and gave up pretty quickly, will try again during the layup.

Mine occasionally drops back into non-auto mode, but that's because of a slightly dodgy connection at the power socket.

I have used one for four years and had one or two problems. The drive pulley on the motor lost its bonding and caused some erratic behaviour.
It took a few attempts to linearise the unit, steaming round in slow circles wasn't
as effective as slowly swinging the unit round through three circles with the rod
disconnected from the tiller whilst tied up in harbour, this also gives you time to
check the readout with the ships compass.
I too had problems accessing the menu in the manual and I made some extra notes as to how to do it, unfortunately it is on the boat and it will be a couple of weeks before I can get it. If you still have problems then, let me know. I think that
you have to wait for a few seconds longer at the initial key presses than the manual suggests

My guess is the power socket. We had similar problems with the unit on our Sadler, when it would suddenly just bleep plaintively and refuse to steer the boat. A generous dollop of Vaseline in the socket following some careful removal of corrosion on the pins restored the contact and did the trick for us.
