Whilst I agree with you in principle I don't think that, for many of us, dying is a matter of choice.

Was not referring to charges for death certificates, just making the point that many discretionary services provided by public bodies to individuals carry a charge. The idea that somehow one is "paying twice" is just not supportable. If you don't need to an SSR you don't pay anything.

Completely different from "common" goods like defence, fire service, police, security etc which are quite rightly funded by general taxation.

Agree with you that some services that have a charge might be better funded out of general taxation, but equally others that are free ought to have a charge - but that is a value/political judgement and one that our elective representatives make on our behalf!

My dad harrumphs mildly about having to pay to renew his aeroplane's VHF license every year, whereas us yotties get it free and it lasts for ten.

Plus, our licence means we get to send 'radio checks' ever five minutes and say 'over and out' at every opportunity.

Getting back to the OP - I read recently that an SSR Certificate is an advantage when selling - along with a Bill of Sale and any relevant VAT documentation.
Whilst not planning to sell my boat, or die, either might happen so I think its a good idea to make things simpler and at 10/- a week I consider it affordable.
