I would like to register my yacht on the SSR, it was previously under its former name but expiry has lapsed, would it be easier to start afresh with its current name or try and refresh and change the name (it was registered a couple of owners ago). Also what documentation do they require ?

There is a "claim vessel" process.

Mine had a lapsed SSR on the old name and in an old owners name too!

I gave them a call and explained, they sent back the following (below).

The stumbling point in my situation was the bill of sale - it had my name, but the SSR needed me and wife too, so had to do some form juggling to comply! Straightforward if single owner.

Thank you for your call. To change the ownership of the vessel we require the below:

(To access forms, information or secure payment link, please Ctrl+Click on underlined link)
  • Application to register
  • Registration fee can be paid via following links, £35 for standard service or £85 for premium, fast track service. If using premium service, please add “premium” to email subject field.
  • Bill of Sale or Sales Invoice confirming the transfer of ownership.

Please note, you will need to print off and sign any documents, we cannot accept digital signatures.

On receipt of the above documents the Certificate of Registry will be issued for your vessel; this will be valid for 5 years.
We will keep your application to change ownership open whilst we wait for all documents, amendments to documents or full fee payment for 30 days from first contact, if no contact is received after this time the application will be cancelled.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Wow, things have 'moved on' since I reged my little dinghy that came from SA.. Just required filling in a form. No proof of ownership or anything else. But, it satisfied the Portuguese authorities, at the time.

As above, it's easy to renew SSR, just need to scan the BoS and fill in a simple form - all done by email (although do need to print, sign, then scan the form).
It didn't matter that ownership had changed a couple of times since registration registration expired (previous BoS was amongst the carrier bag of soggy papers I found in the bilge - the only legible part was a very faint signature!).

Renewing VHF licence was even easier, and was free!

Thanks very helpful

For both VHF and SSR I start from scratch. The system isn't robust anyway and trying to transfer just becomes a nightmare so unless you will struggle to replace your SSR stickers on the boat, or need to reprogram a VHF/AIS it's far easier to pretend it's a new boat. Nobody checks and nobody cares.
This isn't the correct advice, but it is the easiest way forwards usually!

Now that's one I could NOT do - they would not transfer the MMSI, I had to apply for a new one. (Luckily, the radio had not been programmed with the old one, or that would have been an additional cost!)

If you changed your boat but kept the VHF you can just change all of the vessel details on your ship radio licence and keep the MMSI.

I've just claimed my new boat. Previous owner for some reason had 2 SSR numbers ! I went for the 'older' one. Explained this in the email and got the certificate back in 3 days.

My email had the RYA bill of sale and I printed out the new owner form, filled out and rescanned and included that. Did the payment online. The printing and scanning a bit of a pain though.

Presently waiting to hear from ofcom about the ships VHF licence I have applied for.
