Part I - you can obtain all details of a boat etc. not so easy - but possible.

Is it possible to obtain details about a boat or search on-line SSR ........... interesting exercise !!

Did a search to check on myself, see last updated December 2003, so perhaps not that useful unless you have some more details other than name to go on.

presumably someone has access to a DB somewhere but haven't seen it mentioned in open access.
MARS doesn't list the SSR number in it's data, and hasn't a query for it.

So you are back to having the boat name for a vessel with a ships radio licence for it to help at all.

No.

The ITU does not list boats on the SSR register. The info is still classified I believe.

Couldn't find my boat on the ITU, so proof of pudding eaten (it had plums in it).

Re: No.

if you have a ships radio licence (and therefore call sign) I'm surprised you aren't on there.
4 x Zuid Wester or Zuidwester listed but without your call sign I obviously don't know if they are you!

Re: ITU ...

Just responding to some of the matters raised, not specifically to your post Nigel.

MAR's database. This is never complete for pleasure vessels (and small commercial vessels). In fact, many (most?) countries do not even provide callsign information to the database for pleasure and small commercial vessels. Don't know why, but I assume it is because of the vast numbers of such vessels and is of little worth for them being on the register (also most small vessels that are free ranging internationally will be on their nation's EPIRB register eg my own boat is not on the MAR's database but is on it's home nation's EPIRB register). UK seems to keep it reasonably up to date though.

Searches of Ships Register - I cannot speak specifically for the UK register but the general thing is that one can do an internet or telephoned/faxed search for a vessel's name. The only purpose of that is to assist choice of a name for ones own vessel (in the case duplication is not allowed as is certainly the case for the main registers, and usually so for small vessel registers) - so will only say if the name exists or not. Most registers will respond with other brief details from a telephone call or will fax them on request. These will not be guaranteed as to being correct. If correctness is needed, eg when purchasing to check if any encumberances, then one can request a written extract or inspect the register oneself or by your representative. Charges often apply for these services and usually (always?) so for certified extracts. I think one has inferred that the register is confidential - that is not so, they are available for public scrutiny, just in the same was as land registers are.
