Now they are no longer sent as a laminated A5, I scanned in our paper SSR Certificate with a view to laminate a copy. I noticed a faint background image of the lion & unicorn royal coat of arms. Not visible in ordinary light I assume it's a UV watermark that the scanner managed to detect. I attach a contrast enhanced extract which I hope shows the faint image. If my assumption is correct then:

a) Don't try to pass off a high quality copy as the original!

b) Don't laminate the original as the watermark may be damaged or no longer visible

c) Take great care that the original paper certificate doesn't suffer water or abrasion damage

It's clearly visible in the pdf they sent me a few weeks ago, though not sure if they sent a paper copy yet. Seems unlikely to be UV as it's in the pdf.

Certainly that's very clear. It's not visible on my paper copy but I suppose it could be there as a very faint image that the scanner detected.

To be fair there's also a QR code to get to the "original" digital copy so in theory at least the paper copy isn't relevant any more and only serves as an offline handy version to store on the boat. The days of paper being the primary version of anything are becoming numbered at long last. The fact that they didn't put the real copy protection (EURion constellation) in there suggests they don't care about copying. EURion constellation - Wikipedia

I wouldn't worry, my printed version from MCA received via the post a week ago has no visible watermark and is indistinguishable from the copy I printed from the digital copy. In addition the last time I was asked for my SSR was in 1998 in Roscoff by the French police.

I have no doubt at all that Les Douanes, Los Aduanas and marineros across the world will be all over this. I'm certain that the cursory glance such agencies give to an SSR after plucking it from the net-on-a-pole will reveal a veritable plethora of biometric data detailing all manner of lifestyle choices.
