I have an ICOM 801E which has very good transmission on all bands, but has very poor reception. I know this as we have net and the other boats can here me 600+ miles away. But I can only just here them (doesn't matter what frequency band) and its always very broken or has (as SWMBO claims) a helicopter in the background. I have this problem with station transmitions as well (BBC world service etc)

I have fitted 2 Dino Plates, with suffient (according to the approved supplier) area copper strip to earth the system.
All is fitted, earthed and grounded to the manufacturers guidlines.
The DSC aerial I know is mounted too low, but again this has a resonable reception.
I use the insulated backstay as my aerial, but am hoping to replace this with a 6m whip aerial.

Tha aerial cable is run back to the set through the engine room (no other option here), and passes alongside all the other cableing via trunking.

Am I causing interference by running the cable alongside the other electrical cables, or should I be looking elsewhere to resolve the problem? I have checked the earth connections and they are all clean & tight.

What the panels thoughts on resolving this?

Cheers all

Dave

It sounds to me like you are suffering from some kind of interference, if not then you may have a faulty receiver.
Firstly, make sure the problem is not being generated outside the boat by something nearby, if the problem is the same in different locations then it may be generated from within the boat, Make sure the electric is turned off to everything on-board except the radio. This might require you to disconnect the boats supply from the battery, then connect the radio directly to the battery.
Assuming you still have the problem, i would suggest you either try the rig elsewhere , any old bit of wire should be ok for reception, at least to test the source of interference or borrow another rig and see if that suffers the same problem. Once you have identified the problem, then the relevant remedy can be applied.

offshore 20nm it always get much better than if you are near any mains power, street lighting, flat screens fridge motors, old cars.
I assume your problem is when tied up? or are you at sea

What type of Antenna are you using ?

Are you using an ATU ? If so - what type ? Icom I presume.

Is the bad reception on all bands ? or any specific one ?
