SSB installion- any experts?

Bob at sailcom has forgotten a lot more more than most people know about this sort of thing.

For whtat its worth, I've no connection to his business and have I've found his advice really helpful in the past.

Bob knows his stuff. Just bought gear from his as well and lots of his set-ups are out there sailing and being used.
FWIW, the other US "gurus" seem to now recommend only grounding the ATU. That's the way we're doing ours as well. (and added bonus, less copper foil to mouse around!)

err.. confused now.#
I didnt ask about alternative ground systems -we are going to use the copper strip bonded to the lead keel.

The simple question is.. connect the copper strip just to the atu (as per sailcom advice and the system outlined in HR radio at sea), or connect the copper strip to BOTH the atu and tranceiver box?

Hi Carol. I'm no expert on this but followed Bob at Yachtcom's advice on the two installations I have done, one on Moonshine and one on Seraphim. In both cases ATU is/was attached to copper strip with no ground at main set. Both set ups have worked fine.

Is there any risk in doing this? I can check with the icom expert towards the end of next week, but in the meantime....

No. I have made installations with both Yaesu and Icom sets like this. They still work!

The ATU ground is of course abslutely critical.
