sailing across the atlantic we were able to get gribs and download position reports via ssb using north american stations - but at times we were able to connect to a station in france and the uk and they asked a lot of questions like name, zip, call sign ect which we answered and then said what do want to connect and gave a few choices of which none was airmail --
any help would be appreciated as we will be spending a couple of years in the med

oh and yes i do have a ham license

thanks to all
chuck patty and svsoulmates
on the reception quay horta azores

There is a Sailmail station in Belgium from which we had good reception in the Med. Therefore GRIBs, email, weather fax etc.

As Roberto said, there are no Winlink stations in France or UK - to do with the interpretation of international radio licensing I believe. If you use the Airmail program to do the connecting and you've set it up for Winlink access using your ham callsign, there shouldnt be a problem - pick a station and get a connection. If you're not doing that then could you give us some more information about how you are trying to get access.

There is Winlink in Norway Germany Holland Italy and Switzerland Sweden and Spain. They scan a number of frequencies and modes. You can connect using Pactor or Winmor.

You will probably have to register your Ham call sign with Winlink but it is no hassle and this gets catalogue choice of Gribs plus APRS type position reporting.
