SSB and Radio Fax etc - how to test

Hi,
I am in the Carribean and my Sat phone has gone down. Its so long since I used my SSB I can't remember how to set it up. The SSB has one button and a dial. The button changes the display modes from USB, LSB and AM - which should I set?

Say I'm looking to receive one of these frequencies
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, U.S.A.
4317.9 kHz
8503.9 kHz
12789.9 kHz
17146.4 kHz
What should I see on the display? - say I set to 17146 - I do not hear anything like a carrier or transmission.
I'm pretty sure that the aerial andSSB and is ok and I suspect I am tuned to the wrong frequency.
Is there a voice frequency that you should be able to get anywhere in the world - to confirm the SSB and/or the aerial is ok?

There is a continuous time signal broadcast from Colorado on 5000, 10000 and 15000Hz -USB. The broadcast consists of beeps and tones.
 
You need the ssb ie single side band.Whether you use USB (upper side band) or LSB (yes! - lower) depends on what signal they are sending out, but its most likely to be upper

Different frequencies "work" at different times of day, so try every one of them rather than just one

You should be able to tell from other stations on nearby frequencies whether you are receiving - is anything coming out of the loudspeaker? There are ham stations on7.1mc/s and 14 mc/s. If you dont hear any voices on these frequencies or close by you have radio problems
