SS Portofino 47 vs. Princess V48

Just did it the pat on the back ;)
The important is that I was helpful.
But IMO making the right choice is not just about loosing little or making money from it, it is important to feel you have the right boat with the good criteria for your needs. Then all the other things will come all togather very easily.

The above is very difficult considering that a boat is always an emotional purchase. Look at myself I will always dream of having a Magnum, Itama or some other similar makes for the emotion there lines give me, but then I also like the practical aspects of a hard top like your Princess or similar....
Can I ever get the compromise I need may be not unless may be I build a boat for myself...

Ah, now you are starting another thread... what would PYB build for himself?

To add some interest you have no budget constraints on the build, but you have to work to your current budget constraints on day to day use (no unlimited fuel, no unlimited crew, no unlimited maintenance).

I'm interested in where you are getting a return risk-free!

Point taken. There is no such thing any more. Yet another reason to invest in GRP.

Maybe something like:

"Dear R,
Apropos of nothing in particular, I thought I'd just drop you a line to mention a thought I had last night. I was thinking, with interest rates so low and if you chose a low depreciating model, there isn't much difference between keeping cash in the bank or tying it up in a boat.
Best wishes, JFM."

Methinks R is smart enough to smell a rat :). You'll probably get clouted :D. But actually i think it is broadly true. There's no need to do the sums to the penny but very broadly speaking if you buy carefully then you can have your money back. Buying carefully can work different ways. Your v48 looks a good example. I bought the last Sq58 at a very keen price (a couple of weeks after Lehmans had crashed - September 2008 and the world seemed to be ending) and it sold in June 2010 for what I paid for it including what I paid for delivery and tender, etc. I reckon on surprisingly small depreciation on the sq78 too, touch wood.

The big thing currently is that even if you lose a bit of money you wont lose a shed load if you buy carefully, new or used. And if you're one of us boat nutters you get a load of fun out of it (as Epervier says, better to have memories than dreams). So there has never imho been a better time to get a boat. That aint hot air; I'm walking that particular talk :D

Fairline ... the new planned model 41 Squadron has also received a lot of orders

Scuse the thread drift but imho they should market that boat as the 42. I'm visiting the factory on Friday so will suggest this to them, and you can see whether they listened to me when the boat is launched at SIBS and Cannes in early September :)

Yes and yes.

Ex-Senior Crown Prosecutor, rats is what she smells in a rose garden.

I wouldn't bet against you - made money on a new boat purchase, made money on a berth... but I don't think the clever money would be in an upgrade to a V52 or T50. However a well spec'd V53 has some attractions, an option spotted by Jimmy The Builder.

(as Epervier says, better to have memories than dreams)

Nice sentiment
