I’m looking for some 316 wire for the forestay etc, it’s a leisure 17. I’ve got a 17ft mast but will be extending it in some shape or form, as it’s meant to be 20ft, (I’d 17 will be ok please tell me) my question is what thickness do I need? Greatful for any and all help given, thanks

4mm should be plenty sufficient. Some would suggest 3mm, which would also be fine for a while. There's a large proportionate difference in break strength but, more importantly, fatigue life.

Where are you....?

The standing rigging on my 19ft Sea Wych is 3mm. That will be fine for your L17 although I did upgrade the forestay to 4mm.

There is a good Leisure owners association. That'll be the best place to get advice

I have replaced my backstay on 21fter with dyneema. I used 5mm but smaller would be fine. Because you splice it your self and it is adjustable cheaper than wire and swages. Not sure about forestay as worry about chafe of jib hanks. ol'will

Thank you all for your replies and insight, greatly appreciated :), one more question, would the 17ft mast be sufficient? Or should I extend by 3ft? Thanks again :)

Do you have the sails? If so, one presumes thay are for the 17ft mast? Buying new ones is going to hit the budget a bit...

I’ve actually bought some sails on eBay. £60, the pic I’ve attached states the size of the sails.. they may well be the wrong size for mast I have.. but I was sort of hoping I can make them work. They seem to be around the correct size, I think ? and I hope ?

This might help SailboatData.com - LEISURE 17 Sailboat
I ran a scale rule over the picture on the screen and it looks like your sails might fit your shorter mast, so worth a try. Possibly you might have to use the first reef......:)
Collect my mast on the 17th, the sails come next week, I’ll lay them out and see what’s what when I’ve got them all together , ? it works out ?

I would suggest as others have that the mast should match the sails you have. A taller mast with greater sail area would be nice in light wind conditions but then would over power the boat when the wind comes up. For this little boat of low value spending money on new sails mast etc is perhaps not worth it. If the mast is too short for the main sail you might consider splicing in a new section of mast at the bottom. ie perhaps up to 60cms. If you can find a matching mast section piece that is. Get a bit more mast section perhaps 30 cms and cut away the track section so that you cna squeeze the sleeve inside the 2 mast sections. Then pop rivet together. of course if sail is justy amrginally bigger in the luff you could move the gooseneck attachment lower. keep posting as we may be able to help some more or PM me. ol'will

The standard mast was 20ft.

There was an optional taller "lake" rig which was 22ft

The sail areas for the lake rig were larger.

Drop the gooseneck on this boat and an unintended gybe will cut you off at the knees?. (My first boat was a Leisure 17).
