I have a spurs rope cutter fitted to the boat and believe it is the cause of a rattling/chattering noise from the stern gear. I can hear it when under power and to a lesser extent when sailing with the prop freewheeling. Spinning the shaft back and forth by hand also gets a clicking sound. I haven't noticied any encounters with lines or heavy weed but it could have happened. Is it possible that the rubber anti-chatter pads have been dislodged and would this result in noticeable noise?

I had that happen a couple of times - after it had been pulled out of alignment following cutting a rope - the problem being that it was screwed into a fairly soft phosphor-bronze P-bracket. In the end I became fed up with fighting with it and replaced it with a disk cutter. Shame really as I think it was a major source of income for the local divers!

Congratulations you have a new hobby - rope cutter fettling :)

I think you've answered your own question.
If definitely from the cutter, it can only be worn plastic bearings or over tightened...OR, and I think this more likely in your case, that the pads in the locating "V" are dislodged as you say, or its been assembled with incorrect clearance. I found the suppliers very helpful when I had mine serviced, and the made me aware of one or two things that otherwise may have caused problems.......

A bit of feedback. The noise was from the ropecutter which had developed excess wear allowing the blades to strike. A bearing service kit failed to bring the clearance back into spec and replacement of the complete cutter was necessary. The cutter had done 15 years service to my knowledge so reasonable to replace it. Excellent service from Harold Hayles at Yarmouth in providing the parts and advice.
