Hi all,

I'm new to this, so sorry if this subject has been brought up previously.

Where can one get spurious Yanmar parts that would be cheaper to buy than from the main dealer?

(I have been charged Euro 121.89 + Vat for a clamp for the exhaust elbow for a Yanmar 6LP DTE 250hp for example. An engine water hose, Euro 104.31 + Vat. These prices appear to be a little over the top.)

Thanks,

Kevin.

Hello my Kindred Spirit. (See thread Below)

Not sure about bastarded parts for Yanmar. Would suggest looking at. What other uses are there engine put to. Tractor engines maybe, or truck engines. Not many would design and make a boat engine from scratch. Maybe they have bought the engine block in from some one else and marinised it. Filters and things are easy to get replacement parts for. Starter motors and alternators too. Basic engine parts take more tracking down.

Trouble is. Dealership parts man only knows part numbers and you can bet they have been changed. Thats what makes things hard to track down. Maybe not worth the bother. Now if he could find a tame Isuso or Toyota or whatever mechanic and show him the part. See if he recognises it. Then course nearly everything else will fit as well.

Thanks for the replies.

The trouble is, is that the parts I want, are for a marine engine, e.g. exhaust elbow, raw water hose etc. I know that the Toyota LandCruiser uses a Yanmar engine under the Toyota name but the parts I want are not under the bonnet of a 4 wheel drive, unfortunately.

It looks like I'm stuck with the main dealer, then.

Kevin.

Yanmar marine engines are built from the ground up, ie do not start off life as a car or truck engine, but I would suspect that all the bolt-ons are from other vehicles, and because of size I would agree that Toyota or Isuzu are favourite.
I am getting a new boat in a couple of weeks, and it has 2 Yanmars. Nice to know they will be just as expensive as my present Volvo.

Have you tried someone like www.asap-supplies.com ? They stock most pattern parts for items like exhaust elbows etc - certainly for very common engines(but not for Perkins M20...!)
Often though you are stuck with the marine dealer...

I'm not sure if this isany use... but I had the same problem with my Yamaha 420's (also a Toyota 4.2 Block engine) I found BBM's on the south coast who make stainless elbows for about the same money as the standard cast iron one's, they also do a stainless power steering cooler for the same..... They might be worth a call.

The number is 023 8043 5555
(Bill Brown, is the owner)

Hope it helps

"Yanmar marine engines are built from the ground up", who told you that then?

I think you will find that the 250 hp is the same motor as a Landcruiser engine, as also used by Yamaha as a 240hp, and the 300hp is an identical engine except it has a 24 valve head.

Quite a lot of the internal parts are shared by truck and marine, such as timing belts etc.

The parts mentioned originally, hoses and clamps I believe, are obviously not made by either company, just pop down to your local hose suppliers and match them up.

I can't remember the name, but there is an excellent one under the Itchen Bridge, Southampton side. They supply the majority of boat builders in the Southampton area, or try Aquafax at the Hamble, supposedly trade but you can pay cash over the counter.

Yanmar engines...

INteresting how many little bits of info fly around - I had heard (I am not speaking as a member of Yanmars design team!) that all except the 6 cylinder Toyota engine based were their own but, in the case of the above, they didn't think they could improve on it - and Yamaha like it too.
I have the basic 3.54ltr 4 cylinder and can't say that the price of consumables (oil filter etc) was expensive but. in line with many, the relationship betwen trade price for a whole engine and many of the bolt ons is ridiculous - alternator, SMotor, wiring loom, power steering pump etc - add them up and buy a Leopard with change!
