This image shows the arrangement of toggle and loop that is fitted to the Crewsaver sprayhood and pouch that I recently purchased.

As supplied the toggle was firmly knotted to the loop - should it be left like this in use? Obviously one needs to be happy that if you fumble and drop the hood (eg with cold hands) whilst trying to fit it, it isnt going to drift away; on the other hand it might be prudent to be able to release it relatively easily in a hurry?

For those unfamiliar with this, the pouch has a sewn on belt loop so it can be fitted to the lifejacket harness

Any thoughts?

to afix the L/J to your fouley jacket

you've completely lost me there!

The sprayhood is for a lifejacket - not anything else.
The pouch fits to the LJ
The hood has a line attched to it with a toggle on the end.
The pouch has a loop attached to it

The question is,
should toggle be easily detachable from loop or tied on with a difficult to undo knot as it was when received?

Surely you just post the toggle through the loop? & it'll stay connected - you don't untie it!

Blimey this is hard work - :D

I wasn't proposing untying the plastic toggle from the cord!!

As the photo stands it is not connected at all.

As supplied the toggle (with cord attached) had been passed through the loop, around itself three or four ties in some form of quite complex knot. No way would you be able to get the tiggle out of the loop in cold water with numb fingers.

it was the same on all four that I bought

However if I just pass the toggle through the loop without any knot at all the loop is rather large and there is a good chance that the toggle could come out of its own accord.

The point of this post was to discover why the manufacturers tie it in so firmly, rather defeating the point of providing a toggle in the first place.

I understand your question, but I can't see why you'd want to untie it. I have the same pouch and hood arrangement, and the lanyard is plenty long enough to put it over your head without any restriction.

Not really sure why there's a toggle rather than just a knot. Perhaps they buy the hoods in and they come like that?
