Sprayhood material

One of the many jobs that have suddenly [!] appeared, ie, had been forgotten until now is to renew the sprayhood material. Apart from Sunbrella, has anyone found some strong covering material that is waterproof and resilient please?

There are various brands of acrylic fabric. Sunbrella, Sauleda and Top Gun are the most commonly available in UK. All much the same in quality and price although inevitably people have their own favourites, often dictated by the choice of the firm that makes the covers. My current boat has all Sauleda, but previous boats have had Sunbrella. not really noticed any difference in terms of quality and life.

I use Sauleda Seastar Masacril and last sprayhood lasted around 16 years. I think Profabrics stock it in UK.

As do Kayospruce which is where most sailmakers get it from.

I like this "Sprayhood". If I decide to build it would be a tubular steel "X" type frame and covered with epoxied (or polyester) fiberglass cloth

Not really "lots" - only Sauleda and Top Gun are suitable for sprayhoods (as is Sunbrella fro Kayospruce)

Lots as in miles of the stuff, not variety. I've visited. They have a lot of rolls. Piled up to the roof it is.

Am I right in thinking that V92 thread will be needed and that requires an industrial sewing machine?

All that is pretty much out of date - things move on in materials in 15 years, and the proofed acrylic suggested is way better. The challenge is making it to the standard a good canvas working will do. Not impossible but a lot of work and skill in making the patterns for a one of. Having watched mine being designed (with my input), patterned made and fitted I appreciate why it costs so much and why there is a temptation to DIY if you have the time and right machine.

Yes and No. V92 UV resistant thread is best but a full size industrial machine not necessary. I have a Sailrite but others who post here manage well with old heavy domestic machines, which can sometimes be found quite cheap on Ebay or Gumtree..
