Hi all,

Having recently purchased a Konsort one of our first jobs is to have a new sprayhood, enclosure and dodgers made.

I have had a quote from a local company but it seems quite high and im wondering what other options there are.

I have contacted CJ marine who have given a reasonable quote. Does anyone have any experience of their work?

The current sprayhood is very low and therefore makes accessing the cabin quite difficult.

Are there any other companies that would either a) travel to pattern the boat or b) already have a pattern for everything and have excellent quality work.

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Ian

You could try Tec Sew at Gosport, they seem to do a lot of Westerlys, they certainly did an excellant job on mine and were a good saving on the quote I got from CJ Marine

These things are not cheap. I am currently forking out £1250 for Mouse sails (Holyhead) to cover my 2 sprayhood frames (I have an aft cabin) & join them with a zip-out enclosure with roll up sides. Mine is also complicated by having a mizzen mast & stays in the middle of it.

Not cheap, but I am looking forward to getting my conservatory sorted out for the winter. I must sort out some cane furniture & patio plants next.

Spayhood Enclosure

I needed a sparyhood, dodgers and sailcover and saw the sprayhood produced by Martex at a boat jumble. Basically it is a semi DIY job that means you don't need someone to visit. You measure the width of the coachroof, a frame to fit is sent, you take two measurements and a sprayhood is sent via post. You will need to sow the bottom edges and I had to up pick one seam each side so the hood would fit correctly. The net result is all items for less than £600, OK you need to do work yourself, it just depends how good you are at DIY/sowing.

Their website is http://www.martexmarine.com/

One word of warning, if it don't fit you need to sort it out yourself, however in fairness the owner supplied replacement dodgers that were made too short with any argument.

I used Confort Afloat at Quay Lane Boatyard in Gosport for my Westerly. Very good service and quality at a competitive price. If you're a member of the Westerly Owners' Club, they'll also give you a small discount. I wasn't a member initially, but the discount more than made up for the relatively low membership fee.

CJ Marine are based in Chichester and have supplied most of the new Bavarias (in the south at least!)
We have a sprayhood, tent & dodgers - the sprayhood is original - 10 years - we've just placed the order to replace it as it had not been kept clean and the threads where coming undone due to UV damage (same problem with any hood) ... we're going back to CJ Marine despite their reputation as being the more expensive supplier as after 10 years the sprayhood & tent is in general good condition .

Anything else from CJ Marine or anything else from any sprayhood?

I also have dinghies - and the state of the cover of one of them after just 5 years is terrible - we've had to replace it as it wasn't keeping the water out of the boat! Hence I thought 10 years was pretty good!

canvas work in general

Can I put in a vote for making it yourself?

Don't recoil at the thought! I bouth my industrial sewing machine from e bay for 115. Since then, with no previous sewing experience, I have fully reupholstered the bunks in cordura (e bay £35 for a 10 m role (bargin)), Sewn a new spray hood using advice from point north, new doges, a cockpit tent, winch covers, a poo cover to keep seagull poo of my syray hood, a new main cover, oh yes, and a small bag in which lives the anchor light...you can save thousands and the sewing machines hold their value for ever so if you decide it's not for you then bung it back on ebay!

I'd recommend both C&J or Tecsew. I've actually been to Tecsew's manufacturing plant and was very impressed with their design and manufacturing capabilities. Have no direct experience with C&J but have heard good things...
