sprayhood costs, yachting rip-offs?!

I just made a new frame for my sparayhood. Poles a & fittings from Point North cost about £80, but the maximum length they could deliver was a bit over 2m, not the 3m advertised which complicated things a little. I made up a ply frame to bend the pipe which worked well enough, except that I had to park the car on it to make it stay put!

Use the old tubes as a template and leave the new ones a bit long so you can trim them at the final fitting - it's a lot easier to shorten them than lengthen...

ok-thanks all-seems like not such a bad price after all. but for reference, the price quoted was NOT for stainless steel frame, which is already in place-just the material itself and labour. and for more reference, my car is NOT a heap but a finely honed piece of german engineering.

when it starts, that is....

I still have yet to make up a frame and cover for the cockpit cover itself, and will take up recommendations listed above. bah humbug.

I found making a prototype with gaff tape and landscaping plastic is helpful.
With the price of canvas you want to make sure you do not waste it.

I think they are so expensive because a one off is so fiddley to make. All the tools you need to make this will be used to make plenty of other stuff, so there is not much wastage really.

I have followed this thread since you published. Two points to help put things in perspective.

A new sprayhood INCLUDING frames and fixings, taylor made for our boat and fitted by the makers was about £400 five years ago.

I thought that the price you have been quoted included frames. Perhaps you should get some more quotes? I could recomend somewhere in the West Country - but that's not much help!
