Hi, I'm going to spray my ocean 30 hull,
I'm a paint sprayer by trade so this is easy enough for me as I have all the tools and skill to do this properly.
My question is has anyone else sprayed their boat if so which paint did you use?
I've been looking at the usual suspects international, hempel et al. But the prices are mad! Basically these 2 pack coatings are a isocyanate hardened polyurethane so not very hi tech, I can get the same type of paint used for truck and industrial painting at a fraction of the " boat " costing.
Could anyone who has done this let me know what you used and the good and bad points of the coating.
I will be prepping and using an epoxy undercoat so just the top coat recommendations please.

I used basecoat lacquer 2k ( ppg) and found the clear coat started to deteriorate at the waterline after a few years..boat was on the ( tidal ) Deben.
Perhaps a direct gloss 2k wouldn't oxidise..

I've always marvelled at the cost of a boat paint job compared to a car, surely less prep on a boat ?

Wouldn't say that as all prep is fairly standard, you only get a good finish when prepped well, the advance with epoxy primers lets you prep a bit less as the adhesive properties and filling ability of these is greater than the previous types and they sand down really well allowing a better surface to get a great finish, but I get where your coming from.
The PPG clear would be an acrylic 2 pack which is great on s car but is brittle, so not as well suited fir s boat as a polyeurathane which is more forgiving, there are some poly acrylic hybrids which might give the faster dry and flexibility without compromising the gloss which is what I may end up using, but it is good to get what others have used

Thirty two years ago before International Paint introduced Two Pack Paint I was using ICI 2K Two Pack paint at my bodyshop and I had bought a 9 year old boat which had osmosis at the waterline, it had already been repainted with single pack International (308) and osmosis was bubbling through again, it seemed logical to use Two Pack and after preparation I sprayed the effected area, three years later it was still good.
I also used Two Pack clear over base as a Varnish
Since then I have sprayed two boat hills with car/truck Two Pack Paint.
And where my last boat was the paint sprayer told me where they bought their paint from, (a car/truck supplier) and I bought my paint from there.
For Gell Coat paint I found that Ford Diamond White to be a good match,
 
I'm currently using Jotun Megagloss and with mixed car basecoat at around £30 a litre there is not a huge difference in the cost when the price of 2K clear is added. If you can source your basecoat at a much lower price then the cost savings could be better.
 
My father has a similar aged boat on the Shannon like the OP's. He had the boat sprayed initially in acrylic. The paint bubbled after 3yrs - wasn't an underlying GRP issue as metal and plastics sprayed at the same time bubbled also.

The guy who sprayed it (good guy - since retired) resprayed the boat, not sure what he used, I will ask. Seems to be holding up well 2yrs later.

A wood-epoxy half-tonner I crew on was sprayed by a bus painting company in metallic car/bus paint. Looked ace and was pretty durable and it takes a lot of abuse.
 
Above the water any good 2k will be ok, the undercoat is key, I will be using selemix ( by PPG) hi build epoxy primer then selemix 7512 2k polyeurathane, its hi gloss and faster drying that the international and Hempel stuff at half the price, was talking to the tech guy today and it's recommended for all substrates inc grp gel coat and painted gel coat, he told me a lot of boat painters are now using it. Will report back the findings. Thanks for all the imput
 
My boat was sprayed by Desty Marine in Hamble, they used the Awlgrip Awlcraft, best go-to paint for GRP boats by all accounts. They did a fantastic job and it still looks as new even thought it's getting blasted in the SoF

Biggest hurdle is possibly going to be tenting and extraction, as you know not great to have those iso's floating about.

Desty's did mine as well with an Awlcraft 2000 and I have been really impressed. The finished is superb and the reason I went for this paint is that it is repairable.
