Is it possible to spray paint (e.g. bog standard "automotive") directly on epoxy, or should I use a primer first? If so, which one?

In my experience yes, it is. I have epoxy coated steel (screw jack bodies, unknown epoxy type) spray painted black and the paint has adhered well. I have also spray painted 'epoxy' FRP side panels on motocross bikes with spray paint from Halfords, the paint is still there and the side panels have not self destructed!

If this raw new epoxy, the common practice is to abrade it with a grit not more than 200 then apply an epoxy primer, as a primer that primes the epoxy ready for painting.

Some others report adding the primer when the epoxy is still tacky with mixed results.

Good luck and fair winds. :)

Although the OP is looking to paint over epoxy, I was wondering about older techniques. My boat has a colour stripe painted over the GRP (presumably polyester resin). I suppose that this would have been painted on with celulose paint, as it would have been readily available and quick to use. I have hand painted the cove line with white acrylic paint, but wonder whether it would be successful; should I wish to refurbish the blue stripe. Any comments?

Rob.
