My spray hood has gone beyond its sell by date and needs must be replaced. The frame is also 'tired' and the eyelets/clips (what do you call them?) are either broken or in the wrong place, perhaps from a previous incarnation. I was thinking, therefore, to replace the whole lot - take off the old and fill in all the holes and start from a clean sheet. Any recommendations for a supplier? anything I should take special care over?

In my experience, most canvas workers don't want to travel very far, so you need to be talking to someone relatively local. Not much point in recommending someone on the South Coast if your boat is in Dublin!

Normal to try and find somebody local where you can see examples of their work. You can then have it custom designed for your boat. Alternatively as you have a standard boat you may well find one of the major companies such as CJ Marine, Tecsew or Quay Sails (and several others) have the patterns already.

Rung up my local sailmaker and had great service, I am sure a local one to you will do the same.

I'm sure you'll get a better price going local. I've been collecting quotes for a spray hood and cockpit enclosure and suppliers are putting on an extra £200-ish to travel 60 or 70 miles for fitting.

We bought our second hood in Holland, a superb job, and were given the patterns. Much later we had a replacement made in Ramsgate from the same pattern, saving the remeasurement cost. We have also lent the pattern to another owner for his hood. If they need to measure your boat I reckon the pattern has been paid for and should be yours.

CJ Marine have the patterns for my boat - is there much work involved fitting a ready-made yourself?

No, usually it's only the press studs that need to be fitted to match what's on your deck. Half a day at most.

I think I have press studs for two different hoods - and neither set seem to fit the existing! I was thinking of removing the lot, filling in the holes and starting from scratch

What did you do in the end? I'm in the process of getting mine (i.e. Sadler 25 sprayhood) estimated for refurb. at Marshall Marine in Cobh, hoping that the work is just replacing tired stitching and perspex panels.

I removed all the studs and filled the holes and looking to get some spare time to fit the new hood and frame from CJ Marine. The old aluminium frame was tired - the new ss one looks the business. Should I just wish to replace the cover in the future (hopefully not for a while!) I'll probably look more locally.
