Well, as nobody has created a poll and opinion seems divided with little sight of any common ground...

Should 'Spot The Boat' continue in it's current format complete with swimwear model (irrespective of gender) or should the format change to feature only the boat?

(For simplicity, perhaps best to keep this as just a vote and comment on existing thread.)

Edit: have made public, so no hiding away :)

I had a distinct impression that the editor was making the decision.

I got the same impression, but in the true spirit of democracy: Post #92

Just to clarify Spot the Boat has not (yet) been killed off and there is certainly no talk of banning images of women or men in swimsuits from advertising or editorial.

I realise our Spot the Boat competition isn't everyone's cup of tea. My own view is that it's a bit of fun to liven up Friday mornings but I'm happy to listen to others' opinions

The original idea was actually to poke fun at the manufacturers who take photos which barely seem to show any of the boat because it has been obscured by a model. However, I can see that by publishing them, we are in some ways perpetuating their existence.

If someone wants to set up a vote about whether to keep STB as is, ditch it entirely or continue it without any models in shot. I am more than happy to abide by it. It's not a big deal for me.

Hugo

Seems I omitted the ditch it entirely, but then again I don't think anyone has yet requested that?

Richard posted earlier that if someone put up a poll he'd go with the outcome.

To be clear I am not the Editor and certainly have no control over what the editor says or does!

It wont be me going with the outcome however Hugo has said his piece on the "other" thread!

Cheers

so it seems that the forum rolls over when it is stated that Isobel is the editor and it is her decision is (understandably) final, but it's OK for a forum poll to guide Hugo on a fairly serious matter of social policy on STB ?

Does the left hand really know what the right hand is doing ? Another example of inconsistency and lack of definition.

Sorry thats not correct and a little unfair - Hugo is the Editor of Motor Boat & Yachting and Spot the Boat is on his website. They just happen to post it on the motorboat forum as well.

So its Hugos decision to carry it on but Natalie's (the Editor of ybw.com) decision to keep it on the forum.

Its also on Facebook and Twitter.

Ah yes, sorry. it was Hugo who said..

Whilst I have voted I do think that holding a poll misses the point. If some don't like STB in its current format because of the sexist nature of the photographs then going with the majority is the wrong outcome because we create an atmosphere where some people may feel excluded. A poll lacks sophistication and simply serves to perpetuate the view of the majority and who is to say that they are right? Democracy isn't the solution for everything. Just saying :)
