Spot the Boat, not

I recall there was a whizz who was able, using some of image recognition software (that I obviously do not have) who was able to take a Spot the Boat image and with this software come back in a flash with match to the image and thus able to pin down the vessel in question. I also recall that though he had the software he also had a good memory of images and was able to match, or name, the vessel without resorting to this questionable practice (of relying on electronic software).

I would like to date an image, or when it was first posted anywhere on the internet - it is recent(isn) so I'm only looking for say a 12 month, or 2 year search (max). There is obviously no urgency. Its sadly of a catamaran (sail) and if the software is only applicable to a motor boat I fully understand:)

If the man with the skills would not mind I can send the image, I assume by PM.

If the individual is unable to help - I fully understand.

That whizz was my 16 year old son , he never once used an form of software to help him . The one thing that ppl like you never could understand is he knows his boats spent hours looking at them and knew what they were . He was in his last year at school and had time on his hands , he could be on line at 10.00 when it was posted and therefore could reply in no time at all . He now has an apprenticeship so will not be able to take part in stb .

Your post is bordering on slander , you are saying he was cheating and this was never the case .

It's amazing what ppl say when they hide behind a keyboard !!

Get real

I'm not hiding behind a keyboard, that is my name. I have written for YM. I'm not unknown.

I said he, without mentioning names, had the software and but also said he did not use it. Maybe you should re-read the request.

Sorry you feel so upset there was no intent at all to be derogatory and certainly not to slander. I'm impressed, very, with your son's memory, I wish I had that sort of skill.

but rbcoomer - thanks, whether its what I want, do not know, I'll let you know.

Wow! A rather unnecessary response to a perfectly reasonable and polite query?

It's a shame journalists don't use a bit of knowledge when showing pictures of boats. The classic launch used by George Clooney recently was described as a speedboat (they always use this term for any motor boat). Then this week for the big Euromilllions jackpot there was a picture of a lovely superyacht with all the details airbrushed out. This is why boat owners are always deemed to be absolutely minted. Regardless of the size and type of boat.

I also thought the response to a reasonable request was extreme to say the least.

I think the existence of GIS came as a surprise to many STB regulars and some (wrongly IMHO) came to the conclusion that someone good at it time after time must therefore have cheated. Hence the heated debate at the time as many spent ages studying the images without success. I was aware of GIS, but never considered using to 'shortcut' the process (obvious by my lack of success ) but unless YBW 'mask' or otherwise process the image before posting, there's now always going to be doubt for many as the cat's out of the bag. I recall a TV program back in the 80's where talented kids would recognise cars from a rear light cluster or other such quirky facts each week - so never underestimate the ability of people to store an immense library of such things if they're that interested!

The post could probably have been worded more sensitively given the history, but you'd have to have following the original post perhaps to appreciate that? I didn't read it as an accusation - although I can perfectly understand me2's sensitivity toward his son's reputation.

I confess not to have been in anyway aware of a heated debate only that it had been mentioned. I do recall someone, me2?, stating the person with the good memory did not use it (which I thought I had made clear was my understanding - his successes were honest). Sorry if I put 3 and 3 together and got 17.

I knew of image recognition, the security services use it, it was not, till I read one or 2 posts on STB that it was 'commonly' available as I recalled someone saying it could be used for STB.

I now wish I had not asked,

Jonathan
