He gave us a friendly wave unlike the semi-displacement mobo that passed 30 metres away as we were going past the Hamble Pt Buoy. We were just setting sail in light airs and had to hang on as we rolled violently.Anchor ball?
Mebbe he is an RYA examiner on leave.
And here we have another reason why I don’t enjoy sailing in the Solent. (I’m having a grumpy day…)

We rolled violently a few moments later. A few moments after he passed he slowed right down. Hey ho…
We’ve just motored past a boat with a fisherman. I thought it was a relatively rare sight to behold…

I tried to but I then I thought it might be more interesting as ‘spot the ball’!A bit lost in the foliage, perhaps a shot as you lined him up with the white sheds to the left?
Exactly right. You win some sort of virtual prize. . .I think I know the location. Is it off Meon Shore just west of Titchfield Haven?
It’s not the colour I ordered for our summer cruise. One of these days we’re heading S and then West by a few thousand miles. My experience is that the sky is reliably a different colour there. The colour of the sky made me shiver. ?
Like this one perhaps?

You were lucky - in 2016, May Bank Holiday Sunday I exited Yarmouth on my way to Chichester and not only could hardly see any open water for boats but was very nearly mown down several times by small and VERY large mobos/gin-palaces/ski-boats etc, some only a couple of metres away - with pratts drinking, laughing at me and most going flat-out.And here we have another reason why I don’t enjoy sailing in the Solent. We might mock the South Coast motorboats for their insensitivity and vulgarity but the most alarming waters I have sailed in were those of the west Swedish archipelago. Navigation consists of finding one’s way through myriads of rocks, often using narrow passages. At any moment a medium-sized boat might pop out from behind an island and whizz past at full speed, these boats often being used as daily transport by the locals. The Norwegian visitors were even worse. You were lucky - in 2016, May Bank Holiday Sunday I exited Yarmouth on my way to Chichester and not only could hardly see any open water for boats but was very nearly mown down several times by small and VERY large mobos/gin-palaces/ski-boats etc, some only a couple of metres away - with pratts drinking, laughing at me and most going flat-out.
It made me homesick for the northwest Highlands
Fishing from a boat is common in these parts. It is the reason many have one.
