We are chartering in Croatia next year then heading to Italy. Any one used the ferry? What was the experience like?
I've used the ferries from Ancona / Brindisi / Bari to Greece many times but always without a cabin. Sleeping on deck in the Summer looks like a good idea .... until you wake up in the middle of the night and the decks are streaming with dew. Sleeping in the communal sleeping areas is hit and miss .... it depends who else is sharing your space. Sleeping in the armchairs is just about possible .... but reserve yours early as they will all be gone with a few minutes of setting sail.
A cabin would be much better .... and a day crossing (which is probably possible for Split/Ancona?) would be perfect.

It's an overnighter from Split to Ancona What I'm wondering is whether to book a cabin or armchair both of which have to be booked beforehand with the ticket. Just wondering if it's worth it for a cabin. Ferry leaves 8 at night and gets in at 7am so by the time we've eaten had a few drinks etc will we actually get much sleep in a cabin?

I have made that overnight crossing three or four times and always took a cabin. Apart from the usual background noise of a ship the cabins are quite peaceful and I always got a good night's sleep, especially after a meal and a couple of drinks. Well worth it for the additional modest cost. The only time I took an armchair on an overnight ferry I never slept a wink due to the disturbance of other people moving around, coughing, farting, etc.
