Split finger ends what do you other old gits do?

Neutrogena unscented Norwegian formula hand cream... little and often. Use regularly before starting work to offer some pre-treatment. Prevention is better than cure.

Have used it for years since developing very bad 'birds eyes' and cement burns back in the days of my youth on building sites. Brilliant stuff.
Yes, thats what I use - excellent product but sometimes difficult to find.

My partner is plagued by this every winter. Superglue in the sorest cracks seems to let them heal from underneath. Certainly it stops them hurting.

But the last two winters we started taking vitamin D tablets in early November. Just very cheap Boots ones. Both winters the cracks have disappeared after a week or two, and not come back. This is despite being outdoors most days through the rest of the winter.

I hesitate to claim the vitamin D cured it but we can think of no other factor that changed either year. We had often puzzled over why the cracks only appear in winter, and seemingly were not related to working outdoors. We had wondered whether central heating was a factor but the last 2 tears seem to have disproved that.

I too like a poster above advocated superglue , used it and it worked a treat also on other cuts on hands that dont get a chance to heal when sailing , even thought a great addition to medical kit for more serious cuts requiring immediate attention ,

But

When at a garage recently , one of the guys cut himself badly , i suggested gluing as temporary measure , The owner then said thats what they used to do , untill a friend of his , glued himself , an ingredient from the glue entered his blood stream and affected one of the valves in his heart and was in hospital for weeks , the cause WAS diagnosed as the use of domestic superglue .

There must be a difference then to the stuff docs use ,

Wether this tale is apocryphal or not i dont know , but at moment ive stopped using what i thought was a very usefull assest , any sages know definitively on this or where you can buy medical grade superglue ?

>If I had those symptoms, I'd request a test for leprosy. Seriously.

To catch leprosy you have to have significant exposure to a Leper, lying alongside in bed is an example. I'm not aware leprosy exists in this country.

Thanks all, I will try some of the suggested creams. One problem has been keeping the cream on. I am trying to get my old lumps of leather soft so they don't crack. I apply creams but when working they soon get worn off. I will try the creams under latex gloves or the glove ends.
incidentally and for other old gits I did suffer itchy dry skin over several winters. Tried prescribed creams etc. but was still being driven mad. Then thought 'winter. .central heating....dry air' and started placing water containers over the radiators to raise the humidity..... big improvement!!
Thanks again

One of the cheapest and the best is Castor Oil. Advice given to me by an old pharmacist and he was absolutely correct.

Not easy to find these days but you can get it from Ebay or order it from your local chemist.

I needed Castor Oil for another purpose and two chemists both refused to order it. I tried a health food store where I was known, and they agreed to order it.

Been working shelf stacking and handling cardboard all day has the same effect - splits in the thumbs. All the shop keepers reckon any reasonable hand cream, but particularly at night apply an excess and wear cotton gloves to protect the sheets and keep the cream on the skin. I find the aqueous cream slightly less effective than a dedicated hand cream, but I'm already using it to fend off eczema on my legs. Oh, the joys of ageing!

Rob.

P.S. Mind you, I'm fitter now than I have been in years...

what do you think taking a new born lamb to scotland on KTL would do for the hit rate

of course we would have to keep replacing it as it would be a sheep before I finish

Our lambs are due this week. They're Hebrideans so I think most appropriate. I'll arrange for some to arrive in a mystery parcel so you can unbox them on EweTube.
