I am teaching myself how to splice. I have succeeded with braid on braid.

I now would like to splice Octoplait. So far I have only found description of splicing an 8 strand line where there are 4 pairs of strands. This is different to octoplait where each strand is unpaired. Can anyone point me to a good source of instructions?

Thanks

I managed it with octoplait without instructions, but nearly drove myself mad. Later found http://www.jimmygreen.co.uk/p/techn...l-articles-/splicing-instruction-sanchorplait which shows a different splice to mine!

My splice is not coming undone though...

My main comment is that an 8 strand splice is a bit bulky, don't take it too far back up the original line. Plenty strong, but stiff at the splice. You may have problems with fairleads if you make them too long!!

I have been able to splice 3 strand rope for ages and thought I would have a go with some octoplait mooring ropes I got.

Those Liros instructions with the blue rope I just couldn't fathom, I couldn't work out where each pair of strands was supposed to go, the pictrures are a bit blue.

The Jimmy Green instructions I had more luck with, much easier to follow with the marked strands. Once I have put an eyesplice/thimble in the end of my anchor plait, eye splicing the mooring ropes was much easier.

With octoplait you don't go round the standing part, each pair of strands goes along the same side of the rope.

I did it years ago without instruction. I simply paired each strand in the working end with a strand in the standing part and tucked it in alongside following its partner strand. It worked pretty well.

Get some coloured marker pens and mark the different pairs of unlaid strands with different colours along their length-you can then follow the splice and at a glance see where you have made any mistake..
There is a very ugly easy version which I noted Gaelforce use when working seasteel-assume strength is the same

Not sure about the OP comment about octoplait not being in paired parts - my experience is that it is.

Here is a photo of the 8 strand Liros from Jimmy Green. It is not 4 paired strands - unless I am missing something - which is quite possible being 4mm!!!

There's certainly quite a bit of 8 strand line available like this (a lot of the small dyneema is 8 strand), but it's my understanding that it isn't generally known as 'octoplait', which is what the OP was asking about. My understanding of 'octoplait' is that it's this stuff: http://www.albamarineltd.co.uk/Octoplait.htm which is made up of four double strands.
