Can anyone point me to a web page giving step by step instructions for splicing braid and braid on braid ropes; I have most of the tools necessary apart from the pullers - can these be made from wire? Many thanks.

Get Plenty of Cold Beers In!

I have followed similar step by step guides to splicing braid on braid before and whilst I've successfully made several splices in line as small as 8mm, larger diameter seems easier to me, the best advice was to "get plenty of cold beers in" for when you've finished!

It's not rocket science and there are a couple of different ways of achieving a neat splice, but "milking" the cover back over once you have pulled the bitter end into the desired area is bl**dy hard work! (You will most definitely deserve at least one afterwards!:)

illustrated eye splice instructions - by email

Don't make the mistake of using old rope to practise on - new rope is much easier to work with.

Agreed, older rope is much harder to splice. The same can be said of matt braid-on-braid which is why all my braid-on-braid stock is standard (shiny) Other reasons as well - matt shouldn't be used on multi-block systems either (eg mainsheet traveller, in-boom reefing) too much friction, hence the splicing difficulties.

If anyone wants an improved version of the Selma Fids eye splice instructions I can send you one by email. I expanded them for my fids buying customers because although the fids are acknowledged to be the best available the manufacturer's instructions didn't come out too well in translation from the original Norwegian. After some practice an eye splice can take as little as 7 minutes, I hope I can get you to that point a bit quicker.
