Perhaps I should have entitled this 'stockists or suppliers with a reasonable delivery charge' for a 5mm x 24mm Spiral Spring Pin.

Was looking for these
5mm Spiral spring pin

The website shown above looked good at 98 pence each.. and I didn't mind buying a few.. but had to add eight to the basket to make up the £7.50 minimum order.. (still okay with me) but when VAT was addded the order came to over £10 then when postage (£5.00) was added it made about £16....

...for a single pin!

Any suggestions as to where I could get a couple either online or somewhere on the South Coast.

Many thanks in advance.

RS sell them, as do MSC, but only in giant packs; spiral pins are an obscure form of an already obscure engineering fastener and they simply aren't readily available over the counter(yes I have been there and bought the t-shirt). Can you substitute a spring pin(sometimes called a roll pin, or by the brand name seloc, sellok or variant thereof) instead? They are a lot easier to get hold of.

Irritatingly there is a vendor on ebay who is using a stock picture of spiral pins, but is actually selling ordinary spring pins! And other vendors with listings with pictures of spiral pins being called roll pins or split pins; it may be worth messaging them to see what they have as they don't always list everything, or list it correctly.

It's actually to hold the rod kicker 12mm dia pivot pin in place within the mast gooseneck style fitting.

Will post a picture later... I needed to remove the big vertical pin holding the kicker in place but it had been installed with the head at the bottom and the removable spiral spring pin at the top.

There was not enough room to drop the vertical pin out so had to cut the head off, remove the said pin upwards, drill a 5mm hole through it and now I wanted to put a similar spiral pin in at the bottom as existed at the top.

The german equivalent of BS has a standard for them; DIN 7344 for heavy duty and DIN 7343 for standard. There's also an ISO standard; ISO 8748 and 8750 respectively.

If you try the larger wholesalers or manufacturers you may be able to phone them up and blag a 'sample' for test purposes; when dealing with fasteners as a design engineer that was quite common.

Thank you.. I did see samples suggested on one website.. they wanted to know your buying position.. might be tricky blagging the right size though!

I seem to think that the stainless variety (perferred in the rigging) are to just one of those standards (the ISO 8750 one).. Seems strange how difficult the purchase of them is..

Ask at the spares dept of your local garden machinery dealer; roll pins are used in lots of bits of garden machinery. I got a couple recently, only a few pence each.
