Spinnaker Tower

A 500 foot high monstrosity is currently being erected at Gunwharf Quay in Portsmouth in the shape of a spinnaker sail. It is officially described as a 'folly' and at a cool £21.1m quid, I would'nt argue with that description. Does anyone know why this thing is being built and who is paying for it? Oh, let me guess - I bet the lottery commissioners have something to do with it
And how come those raggies get their own folly? On behalf of all we stinkpotters I demand our own folly. Perhaps a 500ft diameter propellor made out of scrap Volvo engines and discarded Bayliners located at the mouth of the River Hamble. Any other ideas?

it was originally planned to be the Portsmouth Millenium tower, but its er...late.

When I was just a little boy, I said "mama what should be?, should I be pompey should I be saints, we'll have to wait and see" she said "wash your mouth out son....."

The Tower design was chosen by a competition in which the locals of the City of Portsmouth had their say and chose the Spinnaker Tower. Although I applaud the taste of the people of Portsmouth, the fact the Spinnaker Tower won was probably more to do with the lack of flare of the competing designs rather than a preference for sail over power.

I doubt very much if you will get a Stinkies folly, whatever the source of the material.

Twin Sails

And Poole is getting 'Twin Sails'. The proposed new bridge is supposed to look like twin sails when open. At £14 million (and rising), yet another folly.
