Can anyone tell me the size of spinnaker required for a 27 foot Hunter TK with fractional rig?

I'm interetsed to see if I can pick one up for experimenting using one before I splash out and buy a decent sail.

Any advice about symmetrica l/ asymmetrical etc. etc. would also bed greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Spinnaker choice

We have a 27ft boat with both symmetrical and assymetrical spinnakers to choose from. Assy has a bowsprit that sticks out about 1/2 metre beyond the bow and is retractable. The symmetric has an end-for-end pole with a fixed position on the mast. It is all fractional rigged.

The assymetric is much simpler to operate with a small crew and will point just a little higher in a broad reach. Downwind the fractional assymetric collapses as you get to about 20 degrees off of dead downwind where it is blanketed by the mainsail, giving you a 40 degree no-sail zone going downwind so you have to gybe lots. Even with a bowsprit it needs some help to pull it through the gybe although being blanketed by the main at this point it's not a big issue, just another part of the procedure.

The symmetric needs more people and somebody on the bow to swap the pole over for a gybe. It will point and drive directly downwind should you wish to. The boat is faster downwind with the symmetric and easier to steer since the sails are better distributed side to side of the boat rather than being all on the same side.

There is a similar level of rope and deck clutter for each type. The symmetric has pole up and pole down with single sheet/guy each side. The assy uses the same two sheets plus tack line, bowsprit-out and bowsprit-in. The assy seems easier to sort out if you get into a broachy panicy loss of control situation since it's simpler but with either sail you will spin up into wind if it collapses on a reach and you don't bear away, dump the main and kicker fast enough.

I can't advise on ideal measurements for your boat but probably most sailmakers would be happy to advise with the prospect of selling you something at a future date.

I measured:
I (Spinny block to mast foot) = 740cm
J (Mast foot to center of forestay at deck level) = 260cm
Hoist (approx - Spinny block to centre of pulpit ~ 40cm forward of forestay and 45cm above deck level & anchor roller where I fit tackline block) = 790cm

I already had an asymmetric cruising chute (unknown size†), but splashed out on an 36m2 8m luff Parasail inna snuffer.
Both seem to work well; chute without pole for light wind broad reaching; Parasail with pole if I want to play-with-lots-of-string††; Parasail without pole (nor main) for running.

http://www.seateach.com/Details.asp?ProdID=661&category=303 list a 25m2, 7.93m luff chute for £369 that might work for you.

I'm also in Chi, so look out for the red Parasail next week - you may have already met me and want to go faster ;-)

†PM me with email for some pics.
†† Swap the 2nd reef-line for pole uphaul & turn tackline into pole downhaul, so all lines led aft.

Spin size

This question is a bit like what size jib do I need.
A larger spin might be the size specified in the class rules as a max. However a smaller spin is much nicer for stronger winds or beginner crew.
So whatever you find SH will be good provided it is tall enough. A small spin that is small by being too short will fly too high or float from side to side if not hauled right up. An oversized spin can be cut down easily.
good luck olewill
