Spinnaker pole sizes

Wooden yacht of 42 ft length and I am looking for a spinnaker pole. I know about length, "J" but have no idea what diameter and wall thickness is required. I have considered wood and carbon fibre but either cannot afford the weight or the expense of those choices so aluminium seems to be the only way to go. Any clues please?

Frank, the Selden catalogue (available online) has a table of recommended pole sizes by boat displacement on p 123, may be helpful.

Cant help you with sizing but I would opt for a Carbon Pole and they are not that expensive as the bare tubes for these are fairly standard. Try Atlantic Spars (also a Selden agent) as he used to do a line in Carbon tube, much better than a heavy aluminium or wooden one. You will probably need the size of your largest spinnaker as well.
