on my boat, fractional rigger, the spinny halyard comes out of a double sheave next to the genoa halyard. Since the genny has roller reefing the spinny halyard rub on the hardware at the top of the roller reefing. I have in stock one of those polished stainless halyard diverters ( like this ). Has anyone ever put one above the sheave so the halyard goes up the mast after leaving the sheave before then functioning as normal. I cant see this working but I wonder if I am wrong.

The real problem is that the spin halyard exits next to the genoa halyard. It shold really exit well above the genoa halyard exit.
I would consider fitting another exit sheave box like 15cms above the genoa exit. Yes it will mean cutting another large hole in the front of the mast. Should be ok as this area is well supported by stays.
Yes I have seen boats with a sheave on a line lifting the spin halyard above genoa exit. The problem being that the existing halyard exit is aligned for loads down ward when you want the halyard to exit up to the new sheave or what ever you use. This will add friction to your spin halyard system. I can't say I like the idea of that pictured halyard diverter. Be aware that a spin halyard will often be pulling sideways. I use a dead eye. Like a plastic low friction ring mounted on a base plate just below the spin exit sheave to cope with sideways loads. (i like to run sp[in shy) ol'will

I fitted one on my last boat, the top of the furling genoa used to wrap, causing much buggeration. Cost me a finish in an 80 mile race once - within sight of the line.

Placing it needs some thought.

That fitting is more to alter the genoa halyard angle to stop it wrapping round the forestay. I wouldn't trust it for the way you describe and the friction for the rope going through it would be excessive.

Don't you have somewhere to mount a block on the top of the mast? Thats how I've always seen it done, the mast top plate usually has a crane out front for this purpose.

Correct for typical mast head rig however Op has fractional rig so a spin to top of mast might be just too much stress on mast unless it is in very light winds. Spins pull sideways as much as forward.
It did occur to me that his double sheave outlet might have been designed for seond jib halyard not spin halyard. He needs another exit for spin halyard or hang a block on an attachment with external spin halyard. ol'will

On a fractional rig everything but the forestay goes to the top so its still normal to fly a spinnaker there.

Not on my boat. Jeanneau. When I spoke with Z spar they said to position the new exit for top down furler no more than 25cms above the forestay attachment. Mine is 7/8 fractional and uppers only go up to the height of the forestay attachment so everything above that is not supported from the side they said even though the backstay goes to masthead.
