No doubt been done to death but a perennial subject in the bar.

Which is better, end to end or dipped method.

Assuming a 30 odd footer, I tend to go for end to end, mainly to keep the weight back, rather than dipped which puts my lardy frame right on the bow. However, I prefer dipped when it is really blowing as it is safer - less loading on the pole.

Is there really that much of a differance of is it honours even.

In the event of no clear vedict I reserve the right to sod it and buy a J.

If, like our mast, you have a baby stay then you cannot dip the end with any sense - and therefore end2end is the only method available (well would be if we had a spinny, we only have a CC so no real issue!!)

The further back you stand the less your going to suffer from the bow movement.
End2End method can also vary - do you unclip the old guy before clipping on the new one or do you unclip from the mast, clip on the new guy then unclip the old one ... ?

Interesting, I always felt I had more control in all conditions going end for end.
Dipping the pole in heavy conditions can be a bit risky. The secret to simple gybes is a very good hand on the tiller, one that has done his/her time on the foredeck seems to well.

BTW, you can still use 2 poles even in racing, just don't leave them both up.
makes it safer (nothing is 'safe' on the pointy end) and very easy to control too.

I've never used end to end but I'm considering trying it. Am I right in saying that with end to end you don't have to touch the pole uphaul as the pole just rotates around the up and downhaul? Wouldn't this be easier if short handed?
 
Yes, the uphaul remains as it, although occasionaly it helps to have a switched on pit member to give some slack if it is over cranked, likewise with the downhaul if it is overtension - prevents the bowman from fighting it.

I tend to do the gybe on my own as the mastman just gets in the way, helpful and smiley as he is.
