Decided to treat myself to one of these and they must be so obvious to install that there are no instructions.

I did find this however:
https://a.spinlockcdn.com/ypn2wip1o7di8m22ilkn3bbsusvz

So it appears to me that I have to drill an 18mm (unless I find a 17mm drill bit) hole in my 39mm wide tiller (!).
Then insert the female part up from the bottom with two more holes for the machine screws which are countersunk in to the top of the tiller.
The male part on the extension then just slots in with nothing but gravity keeping it there.

Seems a very invasive thing to do on my freshly varnished tiller. Or am I completely missing something?

You could just epoxy in the top part, but personally I'd just do it as they say with the bolts. There's a bit more jiggle with these in use compared to a tiller pilot so although the same in theory I wouldn't be as confident with the epoxy method. That said, if it fails you can just grab the stick.

Aha! So I don't need the bottom bit for a wooden tiller just a 12.5mm hole in the top. Makes more sense.
Very helpful.

Correct. I have done two of these. Be careful the hole is centred if you are using a spade bit.

The one I’ve just done, I used a 1/2” router bit, clamped the router to the tiller and plunged it to the required depth. Worked a treat.
