I wanted to replace my old and dented jammers for both main and jib halyards with some clutches, I saw some bargain Spinlock XAS for 6 to 12mm ropes. My halyard are all 8mm brand new dyneema. The main sail area is roughly 20 sqm and Genoa 30sqm. Are these clutches right for the ropes? I am tempted the get the same XAS but a size smaller (4 to 8mm). Also I was thinking of replacing all other jammers (3 reefing lines, preventers etc) with the spinlock mini jammers, they seem sturdy at 400 kg max loading but the reefing lines are pretty thin at 6mm dyneema....

I think I have similar sized clutches; I have just tested a length of 8mm braid on braid with a Spinlock (some of my clutches are Barton) because I intend to reduce the diameter of my reefing lines and it seemed to grip fine - of course Dyneema is a bit more "slippery" than braid on braid

Maybe they're OK but I was waned against them. I was told the handle is plastic and they are not up to the forces required

I used the XAS 6-12 on 8mm dynema main halyard on my previous boat Ok. Where also Ok for the 8mm melange reef lines. Did not have problems with handles.

I've no experience of Spinlock jammers and dyneema rope but I have found that dyneema rope is prone to slipping through a jammer due to the inner core sliding relative to the outer sheath. So you think the rope is jammed but find that the core, which is carrying the real load, gradually slips. This results in a halyard or reefing line mysteriously slackening when there is no obvious slippage of the outer sheath. This is worse if the rope diameter has been reduced when changing from polyester to dyneema in the hope of less friction or stretch or weight which dyneema gives. So changing to dyneema might need a change of jammers to suit, or a dyneema line spliced to a standard polyester one where it is going to be held in a jammer.
