I have a 38m webbing anchor reel job .... and want to know how the webbing is made fast to centre hub. It appears that maybe a piece is missing as the webbing has been plain tied round it by someone in past and of course a) creates a large lump affecting full reeling of webbing, b) when webbing is out it slips on the hub when trying to wind in.

The hub appears to have a large hole set in it that makes you think maybe a pin or wedge fits to hold end ? Anybody know how its finished off ?

If I remember right, there should be a loop in the inner end of the webbing and a pin to jam that in the hub. But it's (obviously) on the boat under the covers. I'll check next time I'm there...

That's what I assumed ... there's a pin out in one of the arms where the webbing comes of the reel - I have an idea that may be the poin req'd. There's no obvious place to set the pin in that arm, so maybe whoever had rell before me misunderstood it's function ?

Well I stitched a small loop in webbing end, put the pin in and fitted it into the cut-out in hub. But it's a very loose fit ... if the webbing ever ran to end while approaching a rock etc. - I think the end would come away too easily. Obviously somethings happened in the life of this to create such slack.
I'm considering drilling through and fitting a bolt through the centre to trap the eye in webbing end.

I think if you snagged a rock and ran the webbing to the end of the reel, if it was fixed too well in the hub it would probably pull the reel off the pushpit, or even the pushpit off the boat...
So probably an advantage if it's not fixed too well, but just enough to prevent the webbing rotating on the hub

The reel is like an anchor windlass in that it's not designed to take a long-term static load. It should be made off to a cleat or something else substantial. IMHO /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The reel I have is not the rail mounted version ... it's more like a flat hose reel with a hand-grip ...

The pin is so loose in the hub slot though - it literally falls out when you get to webbing end. Surely it should be a little more secure than that. I agree not to extent it pulls you / rail into water !
