foreguy rather than downhaul gives MUCH more power to pull the pole down... but trades against need for adjustment at the same time as the guy itself...

Indeed - and it's very easy for things to go pear shaped with a spinnaker!!

How can you have a smaller spinnaker. The sail has to go up to the top of the mast and the foot has to be long enough to allow for the lenght of the pole?

raise the pole, less foot length round to the sheet (tighter foot), much less width high up (narrow shoulders), less full body (flatter).... can halve the size of the spinnaker...

My boat has an inner forestay, so dip-pole won't work, however the boat I race on can do either - we tend to mix'n'match depending on crew. I prefer dip-pole with lazy brace and guy to keep the loads the foredeck need to handle down, which is what MagnaCarter refers to I think in his comments re small versus bigger boats.
On downhaul versus foreguy, I've seen too many variations of their descriptions to be able to comment. I often think that unfair loads are placed on foredecks by downhauls, but boats seem to be fine without belowdeck reinforcements so what would I know ....
