Spin-on replacement for CAV 296 fuel filter on BMC 1.5?

My BMC 1.5 has a CAV 296 main fuel filter on the engine. I have been changing this regularly for the past 28 years with no problem at all but for some reason when I replaced the filter this time it leaks from the seal between the filter and the filter head. I have had it apart three times and changed the filter and seals twice but it still keeps leaking. I have now had enough and have decided to replace it with a spin-on filter.

I want to keep this as simple as possible. ASAP tell me that they can no longer supply the CAV spin-on conversion but I think a Delphi HDF496 will do the job, ie this one:

http://www.ssldieselparts.co.uk/filter-assembly-sfa11-p-718.html

Also, the primary filter between the fuel tank and the lift pump is a CAV296 with an agglomerator below the filter. Would the HDF496 be a good replacement for this as well?

All advice or alternative better suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

That link isn't working for me, but if it's the kit I think it is, it will be fine.
Equally, there's no reason a similar filter won't work as the primary. However, it's usual for the engine filter to be finer than the primary, which would indicate different filter elements.
I've always found conventional CAV set-ups fine, but only providing access is good: if it's at all awkward, centreing the seals can be difficult. Either way, I think 28 years without a leak might count as some sort of record. In fact Mr Nobel really ought to mark your achievement. If you can bear another conventional CAV, SSL do one with a built-in manual 'doughnut' pump: makes priming easy.

Note that there's another current CAV thread here: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?418402-CAV-Fuel-Filter

Funny I have a similar post on Scuttlebut, waiting to here back from these people http://www.ssldieselparts.co.uk/filt...a11-p-718.html as suggested by Pvb good prices but not a lot of technical info waiting to hear about flow throughput per/ hr

Thanks for all the replies chaps. I had a chat with the chap at SSL and he said that the SFA11 was indeed the correct filter head to replace the CAV296 so I have ordered two of them.

A bit of further googling and I found this page:

http://www.lena.geoffrichings.co.uk/sail_site/cav.html

It seems that what I need is a 20 micron filter for the primary such as the Delphi HDF496A and a 5 micron filter for the main filter such as the Baldwin 5587D.

Up to now I have been using Fram C1191PL filters (15 microns) for both and I was rather hoping to use the same spin-on filter for both primary and main filters so if anyone has any further advice on this I would be grateful.

Vyv - the ASAP spin-on conversion appears to be much the same as the Delphi filter head and the filter that ASAP supplied with it seems to be pretty common so shouldn't be a problem in future.

yes they are quite pricey but when you consider the life of the element it hardly counts for a sail boat but maybe for a mobo with greater fuel throughput that's a concern
