Bought 24 meters of 12 mm Polyester braided rope to replace existing mooring lines in the marina,there was cheaper three strand 12mm ,name escapes me line .So spent 30 euros in a builders supply warehouse .Also a bit of plastic tubing that fits the rope snugly to hopefully take the wear where the line has to go through a fair lead,at 2 euros worth seeing if it works.Anyway the builders merchants seems to have lots of bits applicable to low cost yachting🙂
 
When I was a student a chap who was studying medicine pronounced that the pleasure of copulation was only surpassed by the pleasure of defecation. He expressed it in rather more colourful language.
 
Back in the old days the price in the shop was based on costs plus desired profit, mostly as a percentage. Marketing is much more suffisticated now. They can very precise estimate the ultimate price one is willing to pay. Whenever the words boat or yacht is used customers are willing to pay more. Most of the time they can afford it. It's very wist to compare offers on really needed specs. There are cheap offers that will end up expensive when the product is not suitable for marine conditions. I recently bought a wintersail (10×12 m) in a builder suply warehouse. Costed me only 100 euro. But it only lasted for six weeks. I had to buy a proper one. It would have saved me money to buy quality.

I think it may have been King James the 1nth who said that the pleasure of scratching an itch was too good for the common folk to enjoy.

As with any addiction, it starts by gently dipping your toe in the water, thinking you are clever enough to avoid the fate of those who went before you, but that's only the first step on a very slippery slope! 😁

We have a couple of chandlers here. They are a tad expensive. Identical line is available in stores like Ferrocur at a much better price. Same for fishing rods, lures and all that kinda stuff.
 
When fitting out my boat from a bare hull, I found that with care, some 'marine' items could be purchased very much cheaper in Caravan Supply Shops. Some Gas fittings which were identical and of the same safety standard as those in any Chandlery were noticeably cheaper as were some electrical goods. I wanted to fit interior lights up under the side decks in the cabin. The lights were of the fluorescent strip type ( long time ago ) :) They would be tucked away out of sight and just throw illumination downwards. Those from the Caravan shop were basically half the price of identical marine lights. I bought the caravan lights and by sheer chance later had the opportunity to compare the two types.
The marine lights had a blob of sealant inside around the aperture where the wiring entered the plastic rear cover of the light fitting, otherwise they were exactly the same product.
Perhaps that little extra in the manufacturing process warranted the price increase, but I suspect the Marine label was really the culprit for the price hike.

As a Yorkshireman I find the second activity far more pleasurable. Is it possible to have financial constipation?

This is indeed the case. There are items that needs to be marine grade for the obvious reasons but there are others that don’t. I refurbished my old Sealine a few years ago and purchased lots of bits for the interior from caravans shops, Amazon and whatnot.

BOAT = bring on another thousand 😂

That comment goes all the way back to Sir Thomas More (of A man for all seasons fame) in his book Utopos - and he was made a saint.
