speedseal covers

Have not fitted one myself, but have suggested them to a few friends who had trouble with access on their systems and they have been pleased with them. Not Perkins engines but I don't think that makes much difference. Of course it doesn't make it any easier to get the impeller itself out though - I use a modified puller for that.

yes fitted one to my volvo, makes the function of replacing your impellor simpler, by not having to fumble around with 4 or 6 little bolts, phone him up or email and ask, make sure you have the details about your pump, as there are normally different types fitted to same engines.

I have a Perkins engine on my Cox Master Mariner and I bought a speedseal and found it a pain. You cannot access
the supplied screw close to the engine block and have to fit
the normal screw.

My advice is dont bother!

I had trouble getting a seal on a Yanmar GM10 and went back to the original cover. Just did a bit of practice. Have to say they are really well made though.

I have fitted Speedseal to three different engines & they are first class.I did find that I needed an extra turn with a pair of grips to the knurled nuts.Must be my weak fingers.Someone suggested just buying the knurled nuts & using the original cover plate & paper template.Could be a good idea.

thanks chaps ,i think from the mixed replies and the fact they are over £40 i may struggle on , but maybe try just the knurled nuts on the original cover plate. i'll get the plate off and see. cheers

We have a 4108, never any problems accessing or removing the impeller. unlike changing the starter, accessing the bleed point on the injector pump etc etc,.

I fitted them to my Yanmars, very mixed results though. The cover is on the back side of the pump so almost impossible to access without taking the pump off first, at which point you've got the toolbox out anyway. Secondly I was having terrible problems with the pumps not priming and no water flow through the engines. In the end I tracked it down to the fact that on these pumps the O-ring is quite thick and hand-tightening the screws wasn't compressing them, leaving the cover a few thou from being fully seated. Ended up having to use pliers on the nuts. Also, the impeller had worn quite a dent in the face of the plate. I rather wish I hadn't lost the original plates /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I fitted one to my Yanmar, as already said you've got to remove the pump to get at the back anyway so the extra time to undo the screws is negligible, I put the original cover back on, so if anyone wants a speedseal for a yanmar 3gmf simpson pump they can have mine in exchange for a pint.
