There is a huge trimaran that we saw in La Trinite a year or two back that had what looked like an airplane tailfin/wing on the stern. Closer inspection revealed it as part of a foldaway hydrofoil system with more under the cross beams, forgive me if I get the design details wrong. Next day by chance I bought one of the French saily mags and there was a big article about it having got very close to the 50kt barrier and being expected to break it -WOW!

yes thank you, I'd heard of a 4.8 neil pryde sail, but it was a long time ago when i did windsurfing and a custom starboard did not ring any bells.
wonder if its like riding a bike, perhaps i could give it another go sometime this season. I'd be happy just to move foward and turnaround nevermind 49 knots

Hydroptere has just relaunched with a redesign - they're aiming to break the 50kn barrier - would not want to do a faceplant into a wave at those speeds!

These French Trimarans are mind boggling enough even sans hdydrofoils. We were on passage from Quiberon to Concarneau outside of Groix and making about 6kts hard on the wind, our optimum is 7kts so it shows we were sailing in light wind and making our own add-on to the apparent. A big tri tacked half a mile astern of us having come out from inshore of Isle De Groix/Lorient, it was going well with a reefed main and the outer of it's two headsails furled away. When it tacked 20 minutes later parallel to our course it was a mile ahead - who said these beasts don't go upwind! Now we had full sail on a tall rig and were not up to speed so say less than 12kts apparent at most, they on the other hand were reefed.

But then I bet they didn't have as good a lunch en route as we did...
