Spent the last week on hols in La Gomera, a v small island in the Canaries just off Tenerife. Coming into the small port one day we saw a huge mast - almost twice the height of the other yachts in the marina. Went over to investigate and found it was Tony Bullimore and Legato, stopping over en route to Barbados and Jamaica. He's hoping to set the speed record for trip from Jamaica back to UK in a couple of months.
Anyway, couldn't believe our luck when Tony and Paul Larsen (ex Team Phillips, Maiden II) invited us on board for a nose around. Both really nice, friendly guys. They'd just arrived from UK the evening before and were busy doing various jobs on the boat, and were leaving for Barbados in 36 hrs, but Paul took at least 1/2 hr to chat to us about the boat, Team Phillips, The Race, Maiden II etc, and let us have the run of the boat. Cant believe how cramped these offshore catamarans are!
Paul is involved in an attempt to set the sailing speed record sometime this year in a specally designed boat - he's hoping to reach 50 knots! I didn't get time to ask him to much about this at the time, although I wish I had - it sounds like a great project. Does anyone know any more about it?
Anyway, just thought I'd share this with you.
Thanks to Tony and Paul for being such gents and showing two gawping tourists around when they were obviously so busy and must have been knackered! Good luck for the respective speed records!
